Work continues to clear overgrowth from town centre

Wilmslow Town Council is continuing with their programme of works to improve the image of Wilmslow and clear the overgrowth from a number of highly visible areas in the town centre.

Overgrown vegetation has been stripped from the memorial gardens roundabout, the triangle of land at the other end of Mill Street (near the A34 junction), at the front of Lindow Common and more recently the roundabout by The Kings Arms where work included replacing the flower beds with grass, which the Council will maintain.

Cllr Rod Menlove said "We have carefully considered the appearance of all sites and have commissioned landscaping to emphasise individual characteristics and so develop separate identities.

"The most high profile site is the roundabout by the memorial gardens where all former planting has been cleared and the mass of signage replaced with four simple bollards. The area will shortly be replanted with low growing perennials and evergreens with a design sympathetic to the adjacent cenotaph and highly relevant to the imminent WW1 commemorations.

"The nearby area on the approach to the A34 has been stripped of the self seeded foliage revealing the potential of this site. It is ideally placed for a wildflower meadow and schemes for extended seasonal displays are being developed."

Cllr Ruth McNulty added "In Station Road the tightly packed vegetation fronting the railway station has been replaced with professional planting that is designed to create an identity of visual space. This is reflected on the opposing Leisure Centre side where the removal of the earth mound early last year has been followed by de-suckering and pruning of nearby trees further contributing to the open aspect.

"Few have been able to appreciate that the Fulshaw roundabout has a central rockery since it is masked by overgrown conifers. Once these are cleared the rockery will be restored as the focal point of a clean and uncluttered design. Many residents commented on the spectacular display of crocus this spring and we hope to enlarge the display this autumn.

"All trimming and pruning has been undertaken sensitively. Foliage to which nesting birds would be attracted in which to rear their fledglings has been strictly avoided."

It would be great if the overgrown avenue of trees around the Little Lindow playground / back of police station could be cut back - it makes that area so dark and dank!

Helen. I am meeting an officer from Cheshire East Council next week to discuss starting a Friends of Little Lindow Group. I will see what we can get done.

Regarding the Fulshaw Cross roundabout- I've always wondered how much it costs to re-plant the flower beds twice a year. It looks very good now that it has been fully turfed and the crocus display was splendid in Spring. Perhaps some more daffodils (as these are no maintenance) could also be planted?

The Kings Arms roundabout is worth every penny spent on plants for the pleasure it gives to local people, it has always looked good.
WILMSLOW Council has got it right putting lovely planters at all entrances of our town.

@ Meryl Spencer; I walked past the lovely planter on the "Welcome to Wilmslow" sign on the road in from Alderley the other day. It is a lovely planter but has neither pots or plants, just two holders. Has some blighter made off with them?
