It's that time of the year again, when local businesses, churches, schools, scouts, guides, fire cadets, police, pubs, nursing homes and even the general public go scarecrow crazy.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean and Wilmslow Business Group, the 2014 Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival will take place from Wednesday June 25th until Sunday July 13th.

Now in it's fifth year, this colourful and fun spectacular is once again guaranteed to put a smile on the face of many thousands of residents and the visitors this event brings into town and, if last year is anything to go by, we could be seeing as many as 300 colourful creations lurking in doorways, hiding in front gardens and even hanging from trees and office windows.

The Rotary scarecrow, 'Recycled Ruth' will play her part at this year's festival by launching her own Selfie Photo Competition where anyone can take photographs with her and send them to the wilmslow.co.uk for displaying in our gallery.

At the end of the festival the selfie taken with Ruth which is judged to be the best will win prize draw tickets and the chance to win many great prizes, including a two day break in a luxury holiday home in Yorkshire and two tickets to visit Concorde at Manchester Airport.

Rotary Club member and 'Mr Scarecrow', Geoff Shelmerdine said "So, keep a look out for Ruth around town from 25th June to 12th July, she will be popping up here there and everywhere waiting for you to capture that prize winning 'Selfie' with her – Good Luck."

Geoff added "This year is a joint event with Incredible Edible to support their efforts in gaining a 'Gold Medal' for Wilmslow in Bloom – and as their theme is Growing for Gold, look out for scarecrows with the golden touch! Scarecrows have already started appearing and as usual the creative minds have been busy coming up with the potential winner of the Competition. The programmers for BBC and ITV have taken an interest in our Scarecrow Festival and are looking to get involved this year – so watch this space for an update."

Additionally the big, bold and boisterous Scarecrow Parade will take place on Saturday July 5th at 11am and 2pm when the two Rotary scarecrows, Rosie and Robin will make their way across town accompanied by the thumping and rhythmic beat of the Batala Samba Drumming Band.

The ever popular Scarecrow Treasure Hunt for all the family will also take place with some great prizes to be won. Forms and maps will soon be available from Wheeldon Opticians on Hawthorn Lane.

The cost to enter the Scarecrow Festival is £20 for businesses and £10 for school which will be used to support local good causes. Scarecrows must be on display by Saturday 21st June so the organisers can take photos for the Scarecrow Treasure Hunt.

Please email your (high resolution) selfie photos taken with 'Recycled Ruth' to [email protected] to be considered for inclusion in our selfie gallery.

We will also be putting together a gallery of the scarecrows so businesses are also invited to email photos of their scarecrow to [email protected].
