Dog attack reported on Manchester Road

Police were called to Manchester Road on Thursday evening following reports that a Japanese Akita had escaped from a nearby garden and attacked another dog that was being walking along the pavement, on a lead, by its owner.

Passers-by assisted the dog's owner and called the police.

PC Lauren Thatcher said "I am investigating an incident on Manchester Road, Wilmslow where a dog was allegedly dangerously out of control in a public place. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

"If anyone witnessed the incident then please contact PC 5253 Thatcher on 101 quoting Inc 1041 12/06."

The dog owner would like to express her gratitude to the members of public that assisted her at the time, for which she says she "will be eternally grateful".

I am very seriously thinking about getting a dog but this has put me off big time. Who would have thought you would be in more danger cos you had a dog. When the dog is found will it be put down

Fortunately no child app was killed / injured.
This incident could result in a death sentence for the Akita and up to £5K fine and or 6 month custodial sentence for its owner, with a possible ban on keeping dogs. Akitas are known to be dominant, territorial and intolerant of other dogs, yet tolerant of children.

The owner should be required to take dog behavioural training course, if allowed to keep dogs, in addition to Statutory penalties imposed.
This is a timely reminder for any dog owners who allow their dogs to run free, off lead, in the Carrs etc, if the dogs won't respond immediately to voice commands.

I don't know much about dogs but this sounds terrible. Get well soon to the other dog and let's hope that the Japanese dog is brought to some level of canine justice. I don't advocate putting it to sleep, perhaps a stern telling off and deprived of treats for 3 months might do the trick. Likewise for the owner too.

Agree with Mark, dogs are dogs and Akitas are a bit mental, and, as Dave says, they are intolerant of other dogs, but do love people so we can probably leave the 'thank god no child was injured' scaremongering at home.

Definitely more behavioural training required but if its an older dog then we all know the saying...

Blame the deed NOT the breed!!! (and the owener!)
A well trained Akita is a joy to have. Training is vital no matter what breed of dog you own.
