A student from Wilmslow High School has won a regional competition organised by the Royal Town Planning Institute as part of their centenary celebrations.
Schools across the North West were invited to enter a competition looking at 'Tomorrow's City'. The competition encouraged young people from across the region to consider how they would plan for a new city for the next 100 years.
Students considered different sources of information to consider what has and hasn't been successful over the past 100 years, and looked at how planners can learn from that to plan for the future. They considered changes in technology, society and demographics to ensure that their city would provide a sustainable environment and community for the future.
Sixth form student Marianne Chappell won first prize and was presented with an iPad mini and a framed certificate.
Marc Watterson Chair of the RTPI NW, and one of the panel of judges, was particularly impressed with the entries received: "all of the entries showed good knowledge of the workings of cities and how the good examples could be built upon. But a selected shortlist of entrants showed additional innovation and creativity in their plans. Whilst the winning entry in particular considered both the benefits to society and the environment of their plan for the future."
Marianne's geography teacher, Mrs Tina Skiffington, who is rightly proud of her achievement, said "Marianne is an intelligent, forward- thinking geographer who considered the impact of both human and physical geography in her design. She is a keen and enthusiastic student who fully deserves the accolade of first prize in this exciting competition. It is an excellent award to have on her CV and the other students in the sixth form have been really impressed by her achievement. Well done Marianne, you are a credit to your family and Wilmslow High School."
