Does Wilmslow want a Neighbourhood Plan?

Wilmslow Town Council has organised a public meeting to enable residents to be informed about, question and debate the option of initiating a Neighbourhood Plan for Wilmslow.

The Localism Act 2011 sets out how local communities can influence planning in their area. Led by local residents a Neighbourhood Plan is about moulding future development, as opposed to stopping future development, and if initiated and finally adopted, would provide a statutory document that would influence future planning decisions in Wilmslow.

This is not the Local Plan which Cheshire East Council is currently working on but it should be noted that a Neighbourhood Plan cannot contradict the Local Plan.

Cllr Keith Purdom, Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council said "Wilmslow Town Council is aware that many individual residents and resident groups in Wilmslow have strong views as to how their town should develop but believe that development should only proceed with significant resident support. A Neighbourhood Plan concluding with a referendum is one way of identifying the ideas that have majority support.

"A Neighbourhood Plan is a significant undertaking both in terms of volunteer time and skills and also in terms of cost to the public purse.

"This public meeting will give residents the opportunity to consider the arguments for and against, to ask questions of the panel assembled, to consider if they would have the skills, time and dedication to play a leading role in a process that could take up to 2 years to complete and to feed their thoughts to the Town Council.

"Wilmslow Town Council currently retains an open mind on this matter and intend to use this public meeting to start to form a view as to whether it would be appropriate to initiate a Neighbourhood Plan for Wilmslow."

The public meeting will take place at Wilmslow High school on Monday 30th September, starting at 7.30pm.

The meeting will feature guest speakers, case studies will be provided and the lead roles for community volunteers and the impact on influencing development will both be explained. Additionally attendees questions will be answered and they will be invited to indicate their support or opposition to creating a Neighbourhood Plan for Wilmslow.
