Major roadworks due to commence in the town centre next week have been rescheduled to avoid a clash with the Wilmslow Motor Show.
Wilmslow town centre is expected to suffer from significant traffic jams for about a month as roadworks are planned for the busy Alderley Road/Water Lane junction.
These works are necessary to enable the existing traffic signal equipment to be renewed due to a signal cable fault, which has resulted in the loss of audible devices, requiring the junction to be re-cabled. At the same time most of the traffic signal poles, which are seriously corroded, will be replaced.
Works, which were scheduled to commence on Monday, 2nd September, will involve excavation of the carriageway and footway in order to replace the outdated signal equipment.
To enable the works to be carried out safely it will be necessary to implement temporary 3-way lights with pedestrian crossing facilities for the full duration of the works.
Cheshire East Highways has confirmed that these major works, which will take approximately 4 weeks to complete, have now been rescheduled to avoid the 2013 Wilmslow Motor Show which is a major event in the town's social calendar.
The works will now start on Monday 9th September and take place from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm.
Cllr Rod Menlove told wilmslow.co.uk "I was aware that these works were needed but it was only late last week that I was told that they were scheduled to start 2nd September for 4 weeks. Disruptions are inevitable and with the Wilmslow Motor Show on Saturday 7th September expected to attract 20,000 visitors, this timing is unacceptable.
"Accordingly, I have contacted Cheshire East Highways over the weekend and have written confirmation that the works will be rescheduled for a later date in September."
Cllr Menlove added "I have no doubts that the works are necessary, not least for safety reasons as some of the audible signalling for pedestrians has been lost due to the faulty cabling. It was planned to inform local businesses and some of these letters with the 2nd September date may already have been sent. As a precaution I am contacting the Wilmslow Business Group and giving a direct contact telephone number for Cheshire East Highways."
Anyone will questions about these planned works should contact Cheshire East Highways, Programme Delivery on 01260 371756.

Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below.
How daft is that?? 6 weeks of summer hols & they decide to start roadworks in Sept!!!! Derr...
For years we thought they did it on purpose to dig up the A55 to Anglesey just when the school hols started!!! This is the same logic!! Do they not think????
Perhaps the contractors are working on other sites not in our area. We are probably the poor relation when it comes to prioritising.
