Vandals attack town centre plants

Vandals have destroyed some of the plant baskets in the town centre.

Plants have been snapped off, pulled out and strewn all over the pavement outside the leisure centre.

Matthew Jackson, Town Clerk commented "The barriers appear to have been attacked on Tuesday night in an act of wanton vandalism. The planters are at their height giving the Town a real lift but the actions of a few have lessened the pleasure for the majority of residents many of whom have been very vocal in their support of this initiative".

He added "Whilst the plants will be replaced the planters will not have the same visual impact. The Town Councils partners in this venture, Oak Nurseries of Lees Lane, have done a fantastic job not only in providing the plants but in maintaining them very early in the morning before most of us are up and about and it is most frustrating that their endeavours have been effected in this way.

"Unfortunately we have to accept that minor incidents happen fairly frequently but the scale of the damage on this occasion is unusual. The matter has been reported and we sincerely hope that there will be some cctv footage available in order for the police to investigate further."

In order to brighten up Wilmslow, the Town Council purchased six additional three tier planters and 25 barrier planters this year to add to the six existing three tier planters and two single level planters.

The new planters have been placed on the wide pavements on Water Lane and Alderley Road, whilst the barrier planters have been used to enhance the railings by the entrance to the Leisure Centre, The Bollin Fee junction and by the roundabout on the A34 (by the Ford garage).

If you have any information about this incident contact Wilmslow Police on 101.

I knew it - you just can't have anything nice these days without mindless idiots wrecking it. What on earth is wrong with people?

This area is covered well by CEC monitored CCTV. I wonder if this matter has been refered to the police?

Idiots. Hope they get hit by a bus. Makes me so angry someone would try to mess up our little town.

I don't think the comments such as 'hope they get run over by a bus' are very helpful. These awful things happen, let's face it. Even in Wilmslow!!!!

I've been told by the Town Council Clerk that the matter has been referred to the police.

Carole, you're right about hoping people being run over by a bus aren't helpful.
I don't see what your comment thanking goodness that it's Wilmslow and not Handforth adds to the debate either.

I am so not surprised. No matter their ages, please lets find these degenerates and punish them by making them clean the toilets every day for a month at the Leisure Centre.
Hats off to Margaret at Turners Nursery for offering new plants too - good on you!

Even if they are caught what's the betting they will be let off with a caution? There is no real deterrent for low level crime these days

If the perpetrators of this mess are caught, can we be assured that they will be asked why they did it?

Little scum bags should be made to clear up the mess and then re-plant the tubs to their original state!
There are just no proper punishments/deterrents any more. If the mindless little idiots had to face the consequences of their actions they might think twice about doing such moronic things in the first place!!!!!!!
The world has gone mad!!! Seriously, they are just going to get away with it!!
It makes my blood boil! Too lenient on the little horror bags!
