Work continues to repair river banks

Further work was carried out last week to restore the river banks in The Carrs park.

Contractors, appointed by The Friends of The Carrs, have been on site this past week carrying out repairs to the river banks between the two footbridges, where, in places, the river bank had eroded right back to the edge of the footpath.

Colin Shepherd, Chairman of Friends of The Carrs commented "The work has been carried out using natural materials and soft engineering techniques that should work with the natural ebb and flow of the river rather than trying to fight the river which is what happens with harder material such as brick, boulders and metal piling and in the longer term does more harm."

Volunteers from the Friends helped with cleaning and reseeding the repaired areas and fencing them off so that the vegetation can fully recover.

Colin added "We will be extending the fencing shortly but do not want to put up more than we have to or have it up for longer than is necessary. During the course of the work the volunteers were visited by the Britain in Bloom judges who seemed very impressed by our efforts.

"In the Autumn we will be looking at adding some trees to the repaired areas and also to the Styal Road boundary to fill some of the gaps in the hedge there. We will also be looking at what further work can be carried out to protect the river banks nearer to Twinnies Bridge where erosion is particularly bad but also where keeping the river as a river rather than turning it into a canal will be harder to achieve - and we do not want a canal!"

Wilmslow Town Council allocated £12,500 to fund this project, which is expected to cost a bit less than this.

The contractors will be returning in the near future to repair some of the work previously carried out downstream from the second footbridge, where the winter floods washed out some of the river bank.
