Cricket: Local derby victory for Wilmslow

Wilmslow CC 1st XI 196 for 4 beat Wayfarers CC 1st XI 192 for 9

A superb all round performance from Ross Kinnerley, who took 3 wickets and then hit a sparkling 100, enabled Wilmslow to get one over local rivals and promotion chasing Wayfarers.

Wilmslow had made the short trip to the Oakwood Farm Oval, requiring a big win in order that their own promotion hopes could be maintained.

Wayfarers would have been content therefore to win the toss, elect to bat and make hay on a glorious sunny afternoon. Aided by a somewhat stunted outfield gaining maximum batting points was the priority.

The fact that it took the full allocation of 48 overs and the loss of 9 wickets gave the early honours to the visitors. Some suggested a score of 220 was more appropriate, than the resulting 192.

In fact this was the biggest score by anyone this season against the Squirrels, to a man the visitors bowled tightly and the fielding was excellent.

Having taken 3 wickets, Kinnerley opened the batting. The resulting ton, his second this season (also against Wayfarers) was totally dominant and included 6 sixes and 13 fours it came in just 82 balls. Chastened but now seemingly in the runs, the previous openers Elliot Rowe (34) and Rob Herriott (26) provided the back up.

Wayfarers undoubtedly have the wherewithal to get promoted, and with Haslington some points ahead of them the Squirrels have a tough run in. This however, was a derby, and the result will long remain as a highlight of the season.
