Cricket: Dramatic win for Wilmslow

Wilmslow CC 1st XI 200 for 8 beat Glazebury CC 1st XI 101 all out.

Whilst the scoreline suggests a comfortable win, this was a game not without drama. The Squirrels moved into third place in the league, but still lack consistency from their batting.

With the loss of two early wickets for no runs, Adam Dixon rewrote the coaching manual by hitting 78 in no time at all. He has a number of shots, never seen on any county ground but they are highly effective. In contrast, opener Elliot Rowe played it by the book for a classical 58 not out, to see the innings completed on 200 for 8. There were some lusty blows from Fulker and Tom Rowe, but too many scores under 10.

The Squirrels bowling attack is a match for most, and on a bouncy wicket backed up by excellent fielding, Glazebury were always in trouble. With only two players in double figures, Ross Kinnerley with 6 for 48 took the honours but Tom Rowe 2 for 19 and Jags Narayaran 2 for 9 repeatedly beat the bat.

As for the drama, Dixon provides that by himself, and we thought we had seen it all when Herriott took a flying one handed catch. However, this was all surpassed by a mid air collision between Kinnerley and Toby Rowe going for the same ball. Hopefully, they will be fit for next week albeit minus a few teeth, and a misshaped nose.

The seconds continue to frustrate, and for a third time this season failed by the narrowest of margins to win the game. This week having scored 175 themselves, they had 6 overs at the last pair to complete the win, but couldn't get that final wicket. Earlier Glover with 58 and Harvey with 39 provided the base for a good score. The bowlers toiled, but a resilient and not untalented Mellor batting line up prevailed.

Next weekend sees the Squirrels competing on four fronts with both cup and league fixtures.
