Youth encouraged to join forum and have their say on leisure activities

Local councils are setting up a panel of young people to support and promote youth activities in the surrounding area.

A group of young people will be elected to form a Youth Forum who will be responsible for reviewing grant applications from youth groups. Approved grant applications will then be submitted to Wilmslow Town Council for final sign off.

Wilmslow Town Council has allocated £25,000 to be spent on youth projects in Wilmslow.

Cllr Ruth McNulty, of Wilmslow Town Council, said "We are looking for young people aged between 13 and 19 to form a team who will actively identify and fund leisure activities for their age group. We want the youth of the town to point us towards projects to help other young people. We have already earmarked funding but we need their guidance to place this money where it will best be used."

Cllr Hilary Shepherd, of Wilmslow Town Council explained "Our intention is to give this panel the freedom to decide how they wish to organise and promote their group and how they can best help other young people in the area. The panel will ideally include young people from all corners of SK9."

The scheme is being organised by Wilmslow LAP and it is proposed that Wilmslow, Handforth, Styal, Chorley and Alderley Edge councils all allocate a proportion of their budget as a maximum spend for this panel within the Council's area - which Wilmslow and Handforth councils have done.

The panel will be recruited in May and June and will benefit from some training. Membership will qualify for a Duke of Edinburgh's award accreditation.

If you would like to be part of the young peoples' voice in the area or if you have any queries please email [email protected] with your details.
