Volunteers spring clean Wilmslow

The second Wilmslow Spring Clean week has been hailed a great success.

Participation this year has been far higher, both at the public sessions and amongst volunteer groups, with some people taking part in more than one public session.

During the three public sessions around 70 bags of litter and debris were collected from the streets and adjoining green spaces of Wilmslow.

The largest turnout was for the Altrincham Road and Lindow Common litter pick on Monday morning which brought together volunteers from the surrounding area, the local fire station and even a gentleman from as far afield as the Wirral.

Litter picks along Chapel Lane, Moor Lane, Alderley Road, Bedells Lane, Knutsford Road, Parkway, South Drive Car Park, Bank Square and Cliff Road have also been undertaken by enthusiastic volunteers and town councillors.

Wilmslow Local Area Partnership (LAP) continued its work to improve the outlook to the town's railway station by completing a litter pick and tidying up of the areas on the station approach.

Matthew Jackson, Town Clerk, commented "Wilmslow High School have played a very active role with students getting involved on several days during the week in cleaning up areas around the school and the railway station. Youth groups have also really thrown themselves into the project with enthusiasm."

The 5th Wilmslow Brownies tackled Hawthorn Street, Victoria Road, Albert Road and Little Lindow on Tuesday evening, 5th Wilmslow Cubs tackled the Browns Lane area on Wednesday evening, 5th Wilmslow Scouts sorted out the grounds of Wilmslow Leisure Centre on Friday evening and 5th Wilmslow Beavers will be participating this week.

In addition to the youth organised events, Colshaw Estate Tenants and Residents Association, in conjunction with Riverside Housing Trust, organised their own litter pick on the estate on Friday lunchtime.

Matthew Jackson added "Thanks go out to Sainsburys who sent staff out to assist the volunteers around the South Drive Car Park on Thursday but most of all to the unpaid willing volunteers who have helped clear the streets and raise the profile of litter to the wider community whilst doing so."

It was nice that 5 members of Wilmslow Trust took part in the litter pick on Wednesday and gratifying that at least 2 passers by commended us on our efforts.
It was also hugely impressive that both Mike Asbury and Delia Thomas not only took part enthusiastically in the litter picks on both Monday and Thursday but also volunteered to do this on a regular basis if some public spirited person will organise this (as already happens in Sandbach).
I understand some people park their cars in Hawthorn Grove and then tip their rubbish on to the verge. Wouldn't it be good if someone could take a picture of them and then prosecute (provided of course that the magistrates then impose a hefty deterrent fine and not simply tell them not to do it again)?
