The Wilmslow Spring Clean, organised by the Town Council, kicked off this week with around 25 volunteers meeting at Lindow Common on Monday, 29th April, to collect litter from the Common and along Altrincham Road.
Around 35 bags of litter were collected leaving that area much tidier.
Cllr Ruth McNulty said "We have been heartened by the numbers of residents who have volunteered to help clean. None of us wants to see litter strewn around the town and we would like, politely but firmly, to point out that the tidiness of our town is a responsibility in which we should all share."
The programme of cleaning continues throughout this week.
There are two further public sessions, the first of these is being on Wednesday, 1st May, with a litter pick along Chapel Lane, Alderley Road (Kings Arms Roundabout to Sainsbury's), and the Moor Lane/Chapel Lane junction. Volunteers are welcome and should assemble 10am at the front of United Reformed Church.
There is one further public session on Thursday, 2nd May, with a litter pick along Cliff Road, Parkway, Sainsbury's car park and the Adlington Road roundabouts - with volunteers assembling at 10am at Wilmslow Parish Hall.
In addition to the public sessions, Wilmslow High School pupils are actively involved during the Spring Clean week with pupils litter picking on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. 5th Wilmslow Scouts, Brownies and Beavers are also taking part with activities targeting other areas of Wilmslow for spring cleaning.
Speaking about the longer term, Cllr McNulty said "We are keen to establish a group of volunteers who would make monthly raids on litter in the town. Discarded plastic bottles, crisp packets, drinks cans, chocolate wrappers and cigarette butts blight the hedgerows and verges in Wilmslow."
If you are interested in becoming part of a group to rid the town of litter, please contact the Town Clerk on 01625 402907.
