Name Wilmslow's worst potholes

Following last week's announcement that Cheshire East will spend an extra £25 million over two years repairing roads across the borough we are asking readers to help us identify the worst potholes blighting our roads in Wilmslow.

Successive bad winters and under-investment has left many of our roads in a dreadful condition and when they are patched up the potholes often resurface after only a short period.

Several local residents have contacted us to complain about the condition of local roads and standard of the repair work.

Marina McHugh said "This is just a sticking plaster when major road refurbishment is necessary."

The Council has repaired more than 46,000 potholes since April 1st 2012, at a cost of £1 million, and now aims to fix another 42,000 by the end of this summer.

How many of these should be in Wilmslow?

Councillor David Topping, who replaced Councillor Rod Menlove last week as Cabinet member in charge of the environment, said "With road conditions deteriorating and new potholes forming rapidly, the Council is experiencing a backlog of defects so we must prioritise repairs during the remaining winter months.

"This means busy commuter routes will be treated before, say, residential cul-de-sacs which have less traffic.

"But we are determined to get on top of the problem using the latest technology Velocity patcher combined with traditional highway patching and maintenance activities.

"By adopting this approach, we are expecting to address more than 42,000 potholes by the end of summer and resolve a significant number of defects that have formed in residential areas that can't be treated during the winter months."

Help us identify the most severe potholes in Wilmslow by sending your photos to [email protected] along with a description of where the photo of taken.

Potholes can be reported via Cheshire East Council's online fault reporting page at www.cheshireeasthighways.org/ReportIt or by phoning the highways team on 0300 123 5020.

Well done for raising this subject. We need to raise the profile of potholes in Wilmslow. I drive in Macclesfield fairly regularly and hardly ever see a pothole. Pure chance? I think not...

I also have a problem with the quality of pothole repair. If we are fortunate enough to get a pothole filled in, all too often the pothole returns within a few days. My suspicion is that the contractors are not using the correct methods and materials.

I also find useful to report all types of problems on the "Fix my Street" website.

http://www.fixmystreet.com is a very useful website as you can use it to report potholes, broken streetlights, poorly swept roads, fly-tipping etc . You can use it for any UK location and the website will send the report to the correct local authority. Users can view all issues logged on a map of the area.

I recently did a pothole survey for the AA of Moor Lane, Cumber Lane, Gravel Lane, Chapel Lane and Nursery Lane. I was really shocked at the state of these roads and pavements, especially as quite a proportion of this is a bus route. I would hate to be a cyclist on these roads and wonder how much damage has been done to my car.

Good to read report and the comments with link to the official Cheshire East Highways Fault Reporting website - which is easy to use and you receive an Enquiry Confirmation with reference number and there is a phone number for progress reports with a very efficient person in Macclesfield who gives information quickly.

I have read that Cheshire East Highways do not have links to "fixmystreet" and "fillthathole" but perhaps these websites transfer reports to CEHWY. Does anyone no more about this?

May I repeat the comment I made in the previous story on potholes.
I also despair at the number of excavations / trenches made by the various utilities. It seems evident that there is inadequate attention given to compacting the infill followed by insufficient thickness of topping to complete the repair.
Also, the subject of manhole covers and grid tops should come into this story.
When a stretch of road is completely resurfaced, using the proper surfacing machinery,it seems current practice to grade down the final road level ,by hand, afterwards, to that of the manhole cover rather than the other way round. 1 inch or even1/2 an inch drop in the relative levels produces the same effect as a pot hole, from the start.
Proper treatment of man hole covers should be an important condition in the job specification and the work inspected on completion and before payment.
