Over 100 trees will be planted in Meriton Park, Handforth this month with the help of local volunteering groups.

The Friends of Meriton Road Park and Transition Wilmslow are inviting Handforth residents to come and take part in a planting at the community orchard in the park on Monday, 26th November, followed by the planting of a Jubilee wood on Sunday, 2nd December.

Earlier this year local environmental group, Transition Wilmslow, and the Friends of Meriton Road Park planted six apple trees in the park as the start of a community orchard.

On Monday, 26th November at 2pm, volunteers will be adding a selection of fruit trees to the orchard helped along by pupils from Wilmslow Grange Primary School.  The group is inviting locals to donate funds for a tree to commemorate a loved one, or if they would just like to plant a tree locally.

The planting of the Jubilee Wood at 2pm on the 2nd December is just one in a line of woods recently planted locally to commemorate the Queens Diamond Jubilee this year.  Over a hundred trees donated by the Woodland Trust will be planted by volunteers from the Friends of Meriton Road Park, Transition Wilmslow and the Handforth Guides. Recent planting have included the Carrs in Wilmslow and in Styal.

Another welcome addition to the Park is an orienteering course, which will guide participants around the park and through the newly planted Jubilee wood and includes a trail which is suitable for wheelchair users. It is expected that local groups including the guides and scouts, and the local schools will widely use the circuit, as well as individuals.  Local maps for the trail can be bought in Woods Newsagents in Handforth or, when open, from the Railway modelers in the Park Pavilion for a small price.

Rachel Corrigan of Transition Wilmslow said “It’s great to see so many things going on in my local park, What with the miniature railway, the kids play area, the outdoor gym, orienteering course and the orchard, the park really is a hidden gem.”

Transition Wilmslow aims to look at practical ways that Wilmslow can become more sustainable as a community and less reliant on oil. The group is hosting a presentation on Electric Cars by David Hytch of Transport for Greater Manchester on Monday, 3rd December at 7.30pm at the Friends Meeting House in Wilmslow.

If you’d like more details or would like to get involved contact [email protected] or visit the Transition Wilmslow website. The Friends of Meriton Road Park meet every 1st Monday at 7pm in St Chads Church in Handforth and would welcome anyone interested to come along.
