Wilmslow has been nominated for an award in the RHS North West in Bloom competition.

RHS judges were impressed when they visited the town in July to assess Wilmslow against other similar sized towns in the north west and have confirmed that Wilmslow's entry will receive an award in October.

Organisers of the RHS North West In Bloom competition have also said that they would like to feature Wilmslow in their magazine as the town is a new entry this year and the theme makes Wilmslow a little different from the rest of the entries.

This is first time Wilmslow has entered the competition, choosing an 'edibles' theme.

Twenty one businesses took part this year, making the front of their premises look literally good enough to eat, and volunteers from community groups including Incredible Edible, Transition Wilmslow and Friends of the Carrs all worked hard to make the town bloom.

North West in Bloom aims to encourage local communities to improve and care for their environment through imaginative planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping, conservation and recycling projects, and to sweep away eyesores that blight our streets such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.

Helen Yates, who launched Incredible Edible Wilmslow, told wilmslow.co.uk "The ceremony is in Southport on 28th October where we get to put up a display to show our work alongside all the other North West entrants. We'll then have lunch followed by the awards ceremony and its only then that we get to find out what we have won.

"We should get our feedback then as well which will contain ideas on how to improve for our entry next year as they have nothing away on the judging day."

RHS judges are not the only ones to be impressed with town's entry and the work of Incredible Edible.

Altrincham In Bloom have visited Wilmslow to take an Incredible Edible tour and have been inspired to take an edible slant with their planting for their entry into the RHS North West in Bloom competition next year. Pam Warhurst, founder of the Incredible Edible movement which started in Todmorden, also paid Wilmslow a visit and she was very proud of the town's input to the campaign.

Incredible Edible Wilmslow has also been selected by Morrisons to pilot the Let's Grow Scheme. This is a national project that usually links to schools but this pilot will enable the community group to benefit from the exchange of vouchers for plants and equipment.

Helen Yates, IE Wilmslow's founder told us, 'it's absolutely brilliant that all the hard work across town from volunteers, schools and blooming businesses is being recognised both across the North West and nationally. I am so proud of what we have achieved in such a short space of time and look forward to building on everything we have begun here over the last 18 months.'

Volunteer Helena Jones added, "Everything we do is totally dependent on the contribution of volunteers and we are always searching for more people to help out."

Volunteers meet at 2pm on the first Sunday of every month at Wilmslow Library.

Vouchers for the Let's Grow Scheme can be collected at any Morrisons each time you spend £10 in store, from now until 28th October.
