Double celebration at St Benedict's

St Benedict's Primary School had two reasons to celebrate at the weekend and, despite the rain, St Benedict's went ahead with their Jubilee and 40th anniversary celebrations on Sunday, 3rd June.

Attractions at the event, organised by Lisa Jones and Kirsty Mitchell, included a traditional cake stall, bottle tombola, face painting and big prize raffles, which included tickets for the Olympic Games.

Entertainment was provided by a live band whilst cucumber sandwiches and Pimms were the order of the day for lunch.

Lisa Jones, of St Benedict's Primary School PTA, said "We wanted to celebrate the Jubilee and our school's 40th Anniversary in a memorable way for the children.

"We had lots of games planned, but the weather prevented that.... however, we did put on a Big Lunch in the hall and a bar in a marquee that my husband, Dan Jones put up."

To mark the school's 40th anniversary, the school caretaker Mrs Smedley, who has been at the school for 40 years, planted an oak sapling and cut the cake - whilst the National Anthem played and children waved their Union Jack flags.

Kirsty Mitchell also put together an archive display which enabled lots of ex-pupils to pick themselves out of old school photos.

Lisa added "It was incredible how the school community came together to make this event enjoyable despite the weather and we raised £1000 for the school!"
