Wilmslow marks Queen's Jubilee with party in the park

Thousands of local residents gathered in The Carrs today for a picnic to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Following a day of relentless rain, the sky thankfully cleared and the rain held off so residents could bring a picnic down to the park and enjoy this free community event.

Wilmslow Town Council funded and co-ordinated the event, working with individuals and local groups to mark the Queen's Jubilee.

Welcoming the crowds Cllr Ruth McNulty, vice-chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, announced a "rich variety of music and distraction" and wished everyone a "memorable afternoon".

Entertainment was provided by performances from local groups including: rock band Forever and a Day, Dance Fever, Wilmslow Rock Choir, local crooner Alan Burton, Senior Voices Choir from Wilmslow High School and ensembles from the brass, woodwind and string sections of Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra.

Other performers included youth theatre group 'Tempo', St Bartholomew's Youth Group 'Footstepz' who acted out 'George and the Dragon' and the final act 'Legends of Swing' which featured Mike Palmer.

Entertainment was not restricted to the stage though, as hundreds of ducks raced along the River Bollin competing in the Charity Duck Derby. Organised by Dave Cash the duck racing raised funds for the Princes Trust, Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary, Wilmslow Dean Round Table and Friends of the Carrs.

A parade led by the Alderley District Scout Band made its way through The Carrs, Girl Guiding Wilmslow organised a Jubilee treasure hunt and children from local schools and nurseries created the fabulous bunting.

A bouncy castle, tombola, face painting and plant stall were also available and refreshments could be purchased from a number of local businesses who had set up stalls in the park.

It was a great event where everybody came together. I feel that with a few improvements we should make it a annual tradition (not themed). A few changes would make it bigger and better for the future and I feel that as a whole our town needs a tradition that everyone can become involved. It was throughly enjoyed throught the audience and a success to be repeated.

What a fantastic event which was enjoyed by so many people - young and old. It shows that the community spirit is still alive and just needs an event like this for people to come together. Wouldn't it be good to have a "Picnic in the Park" every year!! Pity the music couldn't continue after 2.30 ?

What a great family day! Thanks to all who came and all who helped! A big thank you to the food outlets staff who worked very hard and all our wonderful performers who gave their time. As always it's the people who packed their picnics and came to enjoy that
makes a day like this such a success.

Having spoken to the players from Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra, they had a great time at the Jubilee Picnic on Monday. Having practised hard, they appreciated the welcome the revellers provided. The whole afternoon was a great success, thanks to the efforts of the organising committee and the people of Wilmslow.

We had a great time on Monday at the picnic in the park. This would be great as an annual event. The Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra really added to the atmosphere!
