Wilmslow Town Council are proposing to name a new road in memory of a renowned code-breaker who lived in Wilmslow.

Councillors have requested that a road on the new residential development at the former Oaklands Primary School on Tudor Road be named Turing Drive, after the World War II code breaker Alan Turing.

Alan Turing was a prominent mathematician and computer scientist whose work with the code-breakers at Bletchley Park helped speed up the end of the Second World War.

In 1952 he was convicted of "gross indecency", after admitting to being homosexual, and was sentenced to chemical castration and given a series of injections of female hormones to reduce his sex drive. His security privileges were also withdrawn meaning he could no longer work for the UK Government Communications Headquarters. Turing killed himself at his home in Wilmslow two years later, aged 41.

He also worked at The University of Manchester and is widely credited with the development of early computers. He featured in the 'Briton's of Distinction' series of stamps issued earlier this year by the Royal Mail and in 1999 Time Magazine named him as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Alan Turing's birth and the Town Council are supportive of this being officially marked in Wilmslow, the town where he lived from 1950 until his death in 1954.

To mark the centenary of Alan Turings birth a number of major events, including exhibitions, conferences and lectures, will take place throughout the year to celebrate the life and scientific influence of Alan Turing.

Visit the Alan Turing Year website for information about events scheduled to take place around the world this year.

More details regarding the development of 21 homes on Tudor Road can be seen on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning application 12/0027M.

First step on a long journey, the Wilmslow Vision document could have been written about anytown anywhere, I think we need whole plan to get local figures, events and culture recognised in not just street names but plaques, story boards and designs. Romany's caravan when restored won't be in Wilmslow.

I'm glad that there are some moves afoot to honour Alan Turing locally but this proposal seems a "low profile". It would be good to see something in the town centre or have a local building named after him (the Library?).
