Putting the fun back into fruit

A group of students from Wilmslow High School have established a company which promotes healthy eating in a fun way to children.

Seventeen students in Year 12 at Wilmslow High School have formed 'Fruity Friends' which produces t-shirts with four different characters "to put the fun back into fruit".

The project is part of the Young Enterprise, established in 1963 to develop and deliver programmes which ensure future generations gain enterprise skills at a young age.

The team of fifteen boys and two girls recently progressed through the first round of the Young Enterprise competition, where they were awarded East Cheshire Overall Winners, as well as receiving the award for the Best Company Report.

Fruity Friends raised over £900 through school fundraising activities, including selling sweets and donuts, delivering fresh sandwiches and cleaning teachers cars, to set the company up and purchase the first batch of t-shirts.

They have also partnered with Transition Wilmslow to help raise awareness of the brand and in February they travelled down to London to meet with the buyers at John Lewis who they are in discussions with about having their products stocked on one of the John Lewis stores.

Fruity Friends PR Manager, Jemma Davis said "Young Enterprise has given teenage entrepreneurs like ourselves the opportunity to experience the reality of operating in the business world. We have learnt the importance of communication, as well as how to successfully pull together as a team to achieve our ambitions."

Fruity Friends are now through to the next round of the Young Enterprise competition, the Cheshire Finals which take place on Thursday, 10th May.

Jemma added "Fruity Friends have many ambitions for the future, however in the meantime we need to keep our fingers crossed for getting through the next round of the Young Enterprise competition."

Their T-shirts can be purchased directly from the team or through the Fruity Friends website.
