Wilmslow Town Council has agreed to initiate a spring clean for the town, help facilitate it and allocate a budget of £3000 towards the week long event in May.

The clean up was proposed by Cllr Ruth McNulty, Vice-Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, who came up with the idea after watching a programme about the annual spring clean which has been taking place in Brussels for over 40 years.

She told fellow councillors "I floated the idea with the Rotary Cub who were thoroughly enthusiastic about it and subsequently I have spoken with the community group chaired by Sainsbury's which includes the Lions, scouts and Wilmslow High School - they were all very keen and said they would like to participate.

"So if we want to go ahead we have lots of volunteers but we are a bit short of time for planning."

The idea is for the event to operate on two levels, firstly by identifying areas in the town where a community effort is required to spruce up the area and secondly to encourage individual households to do their bit by tidying up near their homes and pulling weeds.

Cllr McNulty added "It is a good initiative for the town to make it look better, make us feel better and get some good community spirit.

"It should be run as a LAP (Local Area Partnership) project as it needs various groups to come together to manage it and Richard Christopherson (LAP Manager) will be able to bring various stakeholders into the project. CEC are keen so we'll have their back-up and the help of Wes Hutton and his Streetscape team."

Cllr Paul Barton added "We will try to encourage all of Wilmslow, we want each household to get involved and take pride in their town, it isn't just about organisations."

A budget of £3000 was approved for the project, which will be allocated from the £10,000 annual Streetscene budget.

Cllr McNulty explained "The project is not about money, we don't expect this to cost us serious money. I thought it would be cost neutral but I am suggesting a modest budget incase we need support for the project. After all it will be in May so I do envisage we might have to do some planting, which would spruce up the town anyway."

Cllr Keith Purdom commented "It would be great if we could bring this in at nil cost if that is achievable but it would be good to have the money there if needed."

The Spring Clean event will take place from 15th to 20th May, we will publish further information on wilmslow.co.uk as the details are confirmed.

Sorry, but nothing new with Ruth Murray advocating a clean-up of Wilmslow.I have personally pressed for these measures via Coun. A. Stephnson, R,Medlove, and G. Barton, with little success. Why do we never see the council street cleaning waggons around the town? They are always available on the by-pass every two months.Trees shed their leaves 4 months ago.no leaf cleaning is now done. Some roads have compacted leaves that have been there for over 3 years. How is it Trafford and Stockport Councils still have men blowing pavements and roads throughout the boroughs ,followed with big sweepers to clear the debris. This is the duty of all councils. The only regular Street cleaner is working for' Emersons' picking up litter around the many offices/shops they control. Can we please have a by-law to ensure all shops clean rubbish out side their premises. This was the promise McDonalds adopted to obtain original licences. That as now been dropped .Most of our street litter is from take-away outlets and sandwich shops.Grove St is especially littered, with no redress on shops.I do hope we can build up some pride in the town.Even get residents to cut back hedges and trees that block pavements. Also schoolchildren to be told what those black bins with 'LITTER' on, are for...
