Merchant Taylors School 7-26 Wilmslow High School.

Wilmslow High School progressed to the last 16 of the Daily Mail U18's Rugby Cup with this comfortable win away at Crosby. The win was secured with two tries from Luke 'Forrest' Tyrell, one for Sam Broster and finally one from Robert Taylor. Three of these were converted.

The High School had the supposed advantage of a howling gale blowing them up the pitch in the first half, but possibly a little off course too. The wind made kicking and passing tricky, leading to some unforced errors and a lead at halfway of only 14 points. Given those conditions the home side unbeaten in their last 10 games, might well have taken that score before the game.

A good deal of credit must go to both sides for demonstrating such a high skill level. However, from the start the edge was with the High School. On a narrow pitch, seemingly prepared for the occasion the best way forward was straight and Wilmslow had a match winner in Tyrell.

His score after 5 minutes was off a scrum, his second all of his own making. Run Forrest run and he does, but with so much more. Tyrell and his fellow forwards consistently made the hard yards and then recycled good ball, they also have a knack of turning opposition ball over. It was this dominance that resulted in Taylors never getting a foothold in the game even with a wind at their backs.

The third try came this time from a Callum Hubbard drive forward, he released Sam James who created the opening for Broster. Minutes later with the forwards camped five meters out and playing for time, Rob Taylor burst through a gap to score, scintillating stuff for a prop. The final score went to Merchant Taylors and deservedly so, a try converted but all too late.

Wilmslow have lost one game this season to Woodhouse Grove, and the team from Bradford will be their opponents in the next round. It is now just three more wins to get to Twickenham.
