Photographer soars high

Sun Terns by Kris Worsley2

Wilmslow Guild Photographic Society (WGPS) are celebrating yet another national accolade by one of their members, Kris Worsley.

Kris is known in the club not only as a talented pianist and lecturer at the Royal College of Music, but also as a highly skilled wildlife photographer, usually spending his summers getting very wet photographing otters on the Isle of Mull.

His quest for amazing wildlife images led him to the Farne Islands in Northumberland, where he took this award winning picture, "Sun Terns", of three arctic terns.

The picture was awarded Highly Commended in the Coast and Marine section of the British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) – a competition which is open to photographers of all nationalities, but all entries must have been taken in Britain.

Kris attended the ceremony at Alexandra Palace in London to receive his award and is thrilled with his placing. He said "After getting a boat out to the islands on a hot summer day, I was struggling to photograph the birds in the harsh sunshine (this is the most difficult light to work with as a photographer), so I decided to make the sun a part of the image and photographed the birds as they flew around the sun. In this lucky shot, one bird was captured flying right over the sun, which really gave the picture something extra."

The exhibition of all the winning images has been on display at Alexandra Palace in London and will shortly be on tour around the UK, with the nearest location to Wilmslow being Calke Abbey in Derbyshire from 10th March-1st April 2012.

The photograph appears alongside all the 2011 prize winners in the book, British Wildlife Photography Awards, Collection 2, published by AA Publishing.
