Recycling roadshows come to Wilmslow

Brand new bins are currently being delivered as the area gears up for the introduction of Think Silver, Think Recycling scheme on October 3rd.

As part of the Council's new initiative, designed to give residents a simpler, more convenient three-bin system, 14 roadshows have been organised in the area. These will offer people the chance to find out more information or get any help they might need.

The emphasis of Think Silver, Think Recycling is on the silver (grey) bin, which will be used to collect all dry recyclables, including mixed plastics, glass, cans, aerosols, paper, cardboard, cartons and foil. These bins are being delivered to households in Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Knutsford, Alderley Edge and surrounding areas in time for the start of the service.

The scheme was launched in May for residents in the southern area who are using the scheme successfully.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "These roadshows were successful in helping our residents in the southern part of Cheshire East to raise any issues, ask questions and seek advice.

"Now, I hope all those in the northern region of Cheshire East who would like to find out more will take advantage of these events."

The scheme means there is no more juggling around with bags and boxes because recycling is all sorted in one. All dry recyclable materials will go into one bin, with only one collection day to remember.

Since it was introduced in the south of Cheshire East in May, the area's 'dry recycling' has increased by an impressive 400 tonnes a month. If this is repeated in the north then Cheshire East's 50 per cent total recycling rate will increase by five per cent by 2012.

Events will be held in Wilmslow on Friday September 30th, at Sainsbury's from 10am to 4pm, and Saturday October 15th on Grove Street from 10am to 4pm. A roadshow will also be held in Handforth tomorrow, Wednesday September 28th, at the Summerfields Shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm.

It's amazing that we need a series of roadshows to tell us how to throw rubbish away!
I'm definately not a fan of these additonal ugly eyesores [there's already too much visual pollution of huge bins, especially from houses too small for their bins] - though at least they are not a horrendous bright blue!
I guess like other Wilmslow residents I received info in the post about my new bins.... but I live in an apartment so we don't get them - a waste of money sending me all the info, but mainly -what about those of us who want an easy way to recycle but live in apartments that are provided with large, shop sized, general containers and no recycling bins of any description?

I love the idea of the silver bins and that we can now recycle much more from our doorstep. However within 3 days of receiving the silver bin I had almost filled it. Why are they only emptied once a fortnight and not weekly? I have a waste disposal unit for my kitchen waste so almost all my household waste can go in the silver bin – I now have an empty black bin. Apart from light bulbs I cannot think of anything else that will go in the black bin. Please empty the silver bins weekly.
