Handforth Station gets a Big Tidy Up

12March2011

Volunteers turned out in force on Saturday, March 12th to support Handforth Station's litter pick.

Hosted by The Friends of Handforth Station with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and Northern Rail, the "Big Tidy Up" was a great success with over 30 volunteers taking part.

The 1st Handforth Guides made significant progress preparing the land for their new station garden, which will complement the garden which is being tended by Rotary.

Other volunteers attacked the litter with gusto whilst BTCV worked with children to assemble bird nesting boxes.

Friend's Chairman Mike Bishop was delighted with the event. He said "This spring clean has been our biggest and best yet. We are grateful to the local community, Rotary and the Guides for their excellent efforts today. We also appreciate the support of Northern Rail and BTCV.

"All the hard work ensured that the BBQ laid on by BTCV was consumed with relish!"

The Big Tidy Up is a nationwide project organised by Keep Britain Tidy.

Handforth station could be the prettiest in England, but that's not much use to those Handforth residents with mobility issues or children in prams who can't get down the stairs.

Douglas - you are correct and the Friends of Handforth Station have been seeking a resolution to this. The steps are a legacy of the station rebuild in 1960 - The Friends group have recently met with Cheshire East Council and Network Rail, along with Royal British Legion to establish if a ramp could be provided on the Crewe-bound platform. We'd welcome your support for this initiative.
