Snowmen take centre stage

The business studies team at Wilmslow High School held their Christmas Market yesterday which featured 24 retailers offering a selection of gifts, from chocolates and pates to handmade jewellery and cards.

There was also a Santa's Grotto, barbecue, florist and a bespoke name plate carver. Live entertainment was provided by the Wilmslow Rock Choir, the school choir Rhapsody and the school string quartet.

However, it was a collection of polystyrene snowmen who occupied centre stage. The snowmen, which varied in size from 1 to 4 feet tall, have been on display in shop windows around the town centre for the past week or two.

Wilmslow High School organised the Snowman Parade as part of their 50th anniversary and festive celebrations and 17 businesses have taken part by decorating a snowman in their own style. The snowmen then came together at the Christmas Market where visitors voted for their favourite in return for a 10p donation to charity.

Third place was awarded to Mail Boxes Etc, the runner up was Cheshire Building Society's Santa snowman and the fantastic Cruella de Ville created by Haslam Shoes on Alderley Road was crowned the winner.

Teacher Caroline Baines said "We decided that it would be nice to involve local businesses in our school's 50th anniversary celebrations alongside Christmas and came up with the idea of the Snowman Parade, similar to the Cow Parade that was held in Manchester."

The snowmen have now returned to their homes around Wilmslow Town Centre where they will remain on display until Christmas. A Snowman Trail has been put together with clues to help you find them, copies of which can be purchased from the participating businesses for £1. Those who find all 18 snowmen and discover their names will be in with a chance of winning one of five prizes.

Over £700 was raised from the Christmas Market and Snowman Parade on Saturday which will be donated to The Well Spring Shelter in Stockport.
