Speeding motorists in Wilmslow will be given the option of taking a fine, or explaining to children why they broke the speed limit during Road Safety Week, which takes place from November 22nd to 28th.

Cheshire East Council's road safety team will be at Gorsey Bank Primary School on Tuesday, November 23rd, where police will stop any speeding drivers and offer them the choice of taking a penalty or speaking to children about why they were speeding.

The 'School Speed Watch' event is being organised by the Council and Cheshire Police who are working together as part of the Safer Cheshire East Road Safety Partnership.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "This year's Road Safety Week theme is 'kids say slow down' and this speed watch event is just one of many activities which Gorsey Bank is involved with.

"This school is very proactive on road safety issues and I am confident this initiative will help to keep our children safer by cutting down on speeding outside our schools. Cheshire Police and ourselves are working together in this partnership to improve community life."

Year 6 children at the Altrincham Road school are currently taking part in a speed project where they consider the consequences of speeding and also the costs to society of road crashes. They will also be completing an on-road speed survey during Road Safety Week which involves data collection. Along with a police community support officer (PCSO), youngsters will be recording the speed of vehicles driving past the school to investigate average speeds and to find out how many drivers break the speed limit.

Matt Welsted, Wilmslow Neighbourhood Policing Unit inspector, said: "Speed limits are there to save lives, and motorists should always slow down, take extra care and pay greater attention near schools. Sadly, a minority choose to drive irresponsibly and anti-socially, and this initiative will hold these drivers accountable to the very people they are putting at risk - the children."
