Matthew Lloyd wins Alderley Ward by-election

Conservative candidate Matthew Lloyd has won the Alderley Ward by-election with 67.9% of the vote.

Matthew Lloyd received 1647 votes compared with 779 received by the Liberal Democrat candidate Oliver Romain. Turnout at the by-election was 22.93%, apparently the norm is about 25%.

Speaking with Matthew Lloyd, who is also Vice-Chairman of Alderley Edge Parish Council, after the result had been announced he said "I am honoured to be elected to represent residents in this large diverse ward.

"It has been a very humbling experience having so many people come out to support my campaign and work with me.

"I feel I now have a better understanding of local issues. These vary in different parts of the ward but the large concern which was uniform across the entire ward was planning. Local residents feel the planning process doesn't reflect local needs and desires.

"I am absolutely looking forward to the future. I find it most refreshing that I can actually make a difference, much more than people realise."

I caught up with Oliver Romain over coffee afterwards, he said "I am grateful and encouraged by the support residents showed for our campaign. We achieved a 9 per cent increase in the Liberal Democrat's share of the vote, compared to the last Cheshire East elections in 2008.

"We have built a strong base of support throughout the ward and I look forward to our local candidates making further substantial progress across Cheshire East in next May's local council elections."
