Pupils and staff at Gorsey Bank Primary School are celebrating the official opening of their new extension.

The four classroom facility was unveiled by Cheshire East Council Leader, Wesley Fitzgerald, at a grand opening event attended by the whole school community. The extension also provides a special needs room, medical room, hall extension, staff room extension and toilet facilities.

The energy efficient building, which has a minimum life expectancy of 60 years, replaces a previous extension that was demolished after structural problems developed in 2008 and it was deemed unsafe.

Cheshire East Council were left to foot the £1.8 million bill for the demolition, rebuild and temporary mobile classrooms because the original builders Framework CDM went in to administration.

Council Leader Wesley Fitzgerald said "It is an honour to open this wonderful building and share this special day with the community of Gorsey Bank Primary School.

"Since Cheshire East Council inherited responsibility from the former Cheshire County Council for the failed extension, we have made it a priority to resolve the situation.

"The new structure has been completed to the highest standard and will provide a first class educational environment to be enjoyed by children for many generations to come.

"We greatly appreciate the patience shown by pupils, staff, governors and local residents during construction.

"My sincere thanks also go to the team at Henry Boot who have gone the extra mile to overcome the challenges of the extreme winter weather to complete the project on schedule."

Headteacher Susan Garrod said: "The building is spectacular. Our special thanks go to Cheshire East Council, the contractors Henry Boot and the architects Hartington Fleming and Worsley.

"Thanks also to the pupils and teachers who waited so patiently to occupy it."

Materials from the old structure including sanitary ware and doors were recycled and reused in the new building while masonry items were crushed and used as infill.
