Wilmslow library are launching their Summer Reading Challenge today, Saturday 10th July, which aims to get children to read six or more books of their choice from the library during the summer holidays.

Now in its twelfth year, The Summer Reading Challenge is an immensely popular and successful reading initiative which involves up to 750,000 children across the country, aged four to 11 years. It is created and run by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to inspire more people to read more, and is supported by children's publishers.

The Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities. They can read any books they like, fact books, stories, joke books, picture books, it's up to them. As long as they're borrowing them from the library, they all count.

For 2010, the Challenge has a space theme. Called Space Hop, it coincides with the 350th anniversary of The Royal Society's scientific endeavours and the 2010 BBC Year of Science.

Library Manager Helen Perry explained " Children younger than 5 years can join the Book Crawl version of the challenge. Come into Wilmslow Library to join and you will be given a pack of material including a fold-out poster to collect stickers as you gradually work through the challenge. There will be also be puzzle and colouring sheets to collect and every child who finishes the challenge gets a certificate."

Helen added "There will also be plenty of activities at the library linked either to the Summer Reading Challenge or organised by the Children's Centre."

All events are free, details of which can be found in our events section.
