Classic cars to shine at Wilmslow Show

The 99th Wilmslow Show, to be held at Wilmslow High School on Sunday July 11th, will feature a number of new attractions as well as old favourites such as the Classic Car Show which is a Show and Shine Event.

Each classic car owner is provided with a judging card so they can vote for what they consider to be the three best classic cars on display. It costs nothing to enter, with the winner receiving a trophy and a bottle of champagne.

For the past six years the show has been sponsored by the local Jaguar dealership 'Royles of Wilmslow' and has been very well supported by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club and the Jaguar Drivers Club but it certainly isn't a Jaguar only event, last year many local car clubs attended including 'Hare and Hounds' from Marple and 'Beartown' from Congleton.

John Walker, who has been running the classic car event for almost ten years said "The first year we ran the event we had a turn out of about 50 classic vehicles, cars, motorbikes even some old tractors, this has now grown now to over 300 vehicles.

The oldest vehicle ever entered was a 1914 Calthorpe Light Motorcycle, the biggest was a 1959 ERF 8 wheeler truck and the most amazing was apparently a 1934 Turntable Ladder Fire Engine that had belonged to Macclesfield Brigade and been lent to Manchester during the Second World War to help fight the fires in the Blitz.

Whilst the fastest entrant was a 2008 Keating sports car capable of well over 200mph and the most famous car to be displayed was the metallic green 2002 Jaguar XKR from the James Bond film Die Another Day.

John Walker said "Every year we get lots of modern classics and some absolutely brand new ones such as the two 2009 Aston Martin's that Stratstone of Wilmslow brought along last year. And as if that was not enough one year we had the RAF Red Arrows who performed a 'Descent and Flypast' of the Show Field and this year the RAF are sending the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota."

Mr Walker is the Head of Geography at Wilmslow High School, where he has taught since 1976, and the proud form tutor of 13NJW who have raised enough money to fund 9 Guide Dogs and support 26 other charities. He added "Two of my students even have classic cars of their own, one a Hillman Imp and the other a Morris Minor, both hope to be attending the show so long as they get their homework done first!"

The Classic Car Show at the Wilmslow Show runs from 10am through to 4pm so pop along and have a look at some of the fantastic cars which will be shown there. For more information visit the Wilmslow Show website.

The classic cars were fabulous and full credit to Mr Walker for a very well organised show. It was far,far better than the Capesthorne Hall event earlier in the year!

Motorcycles as well next year Mr Walker!?... be great for the 100th show!
