Grandparents go back to school

Pownall Hall School opened its doors to grandparents this week, who were invited to join their grandchildren and get a taste of what it is like in a modern school. It probably wasn’t what they expected.

The day started for the visitors when they joined the school children for a packed assembly in the School Theatre, and was followed by coffee and refreshments. This gave them the energy needed to join the children in their classes where they were expected to take part, whether it was making clocks in the reception classes, conducting investigations and experiments in the Science Lab or keeping up with the children in the new IT Suite.

A school lunch of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings followed, certainly not the lumpy potato, woody carrots and unidentifiable meat these visitors would have received when they were last at school.

Year six children then gave the grandparents a full tour of the school before leading them once more to the entrance hall to be dismissed by the headmaster, Mr Jonathan Hall.

Jonathan Hall said "The staff and I thought it would be a great idea to invite grandparents to see what their grandchildren actually do in school nowadays, as there have been huge changes in education from the days when they went to school.

"We did not expect such a response, and have been overwhelmed by the numbers of grandparents who took us up on the invitation. Everyone in the school has enjoyed themselves immensely today, both adults and children.

"Although it was hard work for our catering staff to provide for the extra appetites, and for the teachers to accommodate the ‘new’ pupils, all the staff enjoyed themselves. We are certainly going to do this again. A great day!"
