Should Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal have local council?

Cheshire East Council’s Review of Community Governance arrangements in Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal is now entering its first stage of consultation.

Following the three public meetings, which were held in Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal towards the end of April, residents are being encouraged to submit their views on whether a town council or multiple town councils should be created for their areas, if they haven’t already done so.

Householders will shortly receive a postal voting paper and explanatory leaflet, which explains the proposals, and asks them for their views. Areas covered in the letter include:

  • What does a Town Council do?
  • How much does it cost?
  • Why have a town council?
  • How many councillors would there be?
  • What are the options?
  • A single town council for the whole area, or more than one town council?

Cheshire East are urging people to let them know what they think so their views can be considered.

Councillor Jim Crockatt, Chairman of the Review Sub-Committee said: “It’s important people come forward now and give us their feedback, as this will
ensure that the decision we take reflects the wishes of the people in these
areas.”

Following the consultation, the Council will review all of the responses received and make its draft recommendation later in the year.

You can submit your views to: The Elections and Registration Team Manager, Cheshire East Council, Westfields, Sandbach, CW11 1 HZ, or by email.

Does Wilmslow need another tier of local government? Will a new town council provide a stronger voice for the area? Are you clear about what responsibilities a town council would have? How much will it cost?
