A new bus service connecting Wilmslow and Handforth with the Handforth Dean retail park, launched last week.

The new 312 service will be operated by D&G Bus, initially for a 12-month period, from Mondays to Saturdays and is being developer funded as a result of the building of the Next store at the retail park.

Councillor Craig Browne, chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, said: "I am very pleased that this new service is being launched, providing an important link for our communities.

"And while the government £2 bus fare scheme is still in operation, there is an added incentive to get out and use the service."

Departing from Wilmslow railway station on the hour with returns from Handforth Dean at 35 minutes past the hour, the bus will also call at Wilmslow Bank Square and The Paddock in Handforth.

The new service will operate hourly from 9am to 6pm.

So, whilst Wilmslows retail businesses struggle with the high cost of rent / rates and parking in town, they may like to reflect on the fact the Council are lauding the introduction of a subsidised bus service to ferry customers to the out of town shoppingopolis.

General public do now have a choice. Shall I go, or shall I stay? We must be pleased surely? We are and we will use it, if only to train our Hearing Dog puppy to get used to public transport. And there’s a bonus for her, with a trip around a supermarket and if she is very good a trip to meet her friends at Pets at Home.

Landlords set the rents, rates are set by the central government, and I can always find a free car parking space whenever I need to stop and do some shopping in town.
Until now, I have always had to use a car or a train and then walk. Now I can use a direct bus service.
Thank you Cheshire East Council.

Hi Stuart

Central government not only sets the level of Business Rates, it also keeps the lions share of it too.

Westminster takes around 65p in every £1 Cheshire East collects from our local companies in Business Rates. That's around £80m a year or 22% of your Council Tax bill.

A fraction of this money could revolutionise our town. It would totally revamp all our local bus services, allow free town centre car parking and even allow us to update the pavements and seating in our retail areas too.

Currently, as Cheshire East pays around £500,000 a year in Business Rates on its Wilmslow car parks (Yes, we also have to pay Business Rates) and the government keeps £300,000 of your money, there is no such thing as a 'Free' car park for the town.
