Budding photographers shine in school competition

For the fourth consecutive year, children from schools across the county were invited to take part in the Cheshire Schools Junior Photography competition.

Alderley Edge School for Girls, who organised the competition for children in Year 5, invited the 20 shortlisted entries to participate in a day of activities.

The competition was judged by the AESG's Head of Art, Mrs Billington and Teacher of Art, Mrs Halgarth who at the end of the day announced Hla, from Lacey Green Primary Academy, as the overall winner with her photograph entitled The Rain Water.

Whilst Tilly from AESG came second and third place went to Claudia from Alderley Edge Community Primary School.

Each pupil received a goodie bag with small extras for the runners up and winner including light art novelties and a camera key ring.

Mrs Debbie Dawson, Director of Development at AESG said "It is vital that we share our facilities and expertise with children in our community and help to inspire children to learn about new topics and specialisms. This is the third year that we have run the competition and look forward to running it again in 2021."

Mr Jenkins, Computing Coordinator at Lacey Green said: "We were so pleased to have 12 of our students selected for the event. It's a fantastic day for the children - they get a really unique photography experience."

"The twenty budding photographers spent the morning light painting - a photography technique where the children use handheld lights to paint or draw a scene while the shutter of the camera is left open during a long exposure photograph. The children were amazed at some of the effects they were able to create and used combinations of finger and strip lights. During the afternoon, the children were taught about composition and experimented with a variety of arrangements of sea shells, before editing their images and applying a range of filters to enhance them."

He added "We are so proud of all of entrants and delighted to see Hla receive the top award. We would like to thank the staff at Alderley Edge School for Girls for a thoroughly enjoyable day."

What a great initiative! These days almost every child has a camera in their pocket and teaching them the basic rules of composition will turn them from snap-shooters into real photographers.
