Councillor hits out at Winner

Cheshire East Council today hotly defended its restaurants and cuisine, and in particular those of Wilmslow.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, today hit out at Michael Winner’s scathing attack on northern food and his singling out of the Cheshire East town.

He said: “We are justly proud of the food and fresh produce of East Cheshire.
This is a rural area with first-class fine food. We grow it and we breed it – with animals for top-notch pork, beef, lamb and poultry. It’s wholesome and healthy and is used to supply fine restaurants all over the country, including London and the south east.

"We have a discerning population and, when you think of Alderley Edge and Wilmslow in particular, there are lots of high-flying celebrities with discerning palates who happily choose to live there and dine out there.

"Manchester, Liverpool, York and the Lake District, to name but a few, are all centres of culture and fine eating. What’s more, here in East Cheshire we have top chefs who live here and work to a very high standard in the area.

“I think Michael Winner should stick to making films.”
