Preparations are well underway for the 102nd Alderley Edge Festival which will see over 2500 talented young performers take to the stage.

The festival runs from Tuesday 8th until Saturday 12th of May and will showcase both budding and accomplished performers, from reception children to Grade 8 virtuosos.

They will compete in 115 music classes - covering all instruments and vocal - as well as 52 speech and drama classes, which will be held in venues around the village, including local schools, churches and the Festival Hall.

Earlier this week, members of the Festival committee took part in the annual trophy cleaning session, preparing the hundreds of trophies which will be awarded to the winners of the music, speech and drama classes.

Maria Rushton said "Making sure they are in tip top condition for this year's winners is a big job.

"Gallons of polish, piles of dusters and masses of elbow grease are used to get those trophies sparkling!"

The 2018 Festival kicks off on Tuesday, 8th May, with the ever popular Junior Choirs, for pupils in Year 6 and under, and will come to a close on Saturday evening with the Festival Finale where guests will be treated to performances from a selection of this year's talented winners.

The Alderley Edge Festival is now 107 years old, they missed out 5 festivals during the war, and is believed to be the second oldest festival in the UK that is completely run by volunteers.

Marie Grant, President of the Alderley Edge Festival, said "Thanks are due to our Committee and Stewards, who are all volunteers. We are so fortunate to have these hardworking, dedicated and enthusiastic people. To those of you who support the Festival, whether performing, teaching, adjudicating, accompanying or just attending - our special thanks and good wishes."

Local residents are urged to go along to see the talented performers in various venues around the village. Full details are available at www.alderleyedgefestival.com.

Finale tickets are available from the Festival Hall from Wednesday 10th May at 10.30am. Prices: £12 for adults, £6 for children. Light refreshments are included. It starts at 7:30pm and is compered by Anna Meadmore.
