20mph zone introduced around primary school

A 20mph zone is now in place around Lindow Primary School to improve safety for local children.

The new reduced limit will be enforceable on a section of Knutsford Road and Upcast Lane when the '20' signs are flashing, which will coincide with the morning drop-off and afternoon school pick up times.

Councillor Rod Menlove said "This is a dangerous road to cross and I did say when the previous proposal was rejected that we would look at other options. My priority was 20mph and I made the case to Cheshire East that Lindow deserved an early slot in the 3 year roll-out programme for all schools. Happily this was accepted and I would now like school to consider the complementary option of a crossing patrol."

Cheshire East Highways met with the management team and PTA at Lindow Community Primary School last year to discuss their concerns over the safety of children attending the school.

Following the meeting Highways put forward plans for installing a new Puffin crossing, close to the junctions with Church Road, Upcast Lane and Gravel Lane, and introducing a one way system on Church Road from the entrance off Knutsford Road to the junction with St Johns Road which Highways said was required as the crossing would reduce visibility. They also proposed relocating the bus stop lay-by that is currently on Knutsford Road to Gravel Lane to make way for the new Puffin crossing.

However, the plans were met with opposition from some local business owners, their customers and some residents. As a result a petition containing nearly 500 signatures was submitted to Cheshire East Council calling for them to abandon the proposals and use any allocated funding to introduce traffic calming measures and improve signage instead.

Having considered the responses to the consultation Cheshire East Council confirmed they had abandoned the proposed changes.

Hi
It has been widely publicised that these 20mph areas are not mandatory but advisory so how can they be enforced. The Police will not issue speeding tickets to offenders leaving vulnerable children at risk something the objectors should think about if the unthinkable does happen and a child is hurt.

What a complete waste of time?! Do they really think putting up a couple of flashing signs is going to make any difference what so ever.....deluded

A good outcome which meets the needs of the residents, the children and the school. The consultation worked, and a scheme which was 'over the top' and with key flaws was dropped. There was good cooperation between all four town councillors representing Wilmslow East to achieve a workable solution.

Better than nothing, although this should have been standard around all schools years ago.

Those that drive responsibly will continue to do so, and those that don't will also continue to do so. Result, no change.
