Broken lights on A34 to be repaired

As many motorists will have noticed some of the lights on the Wilmslow and Handforth bypass have been out of action for several months.

Cheshire East Council confirmed in December that the lack of lighting on all A34 roundabouts from Handforth Dean Retail Park to Wilmslow High School was due to faults with the underground cables.

Whilst the council's highways team had experienced some difficulties restoring the electrical service on this section of the A34 they had expected to carry out the repairs by the end of last year.

However, the work has not been completed due to difficulties locating the fault, and the majority of the lights on the A34 from the Dean Row Road roundabout to beyond the High School roundabout are still out of order.

The Council has now confirmed though that the work should all be completed by the end of next week.

Councillor David Brown, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "There has been a loss of power supply at sections of the A34 on the Wilmslow/Handforth bypass which has led to lights being out on this route.

"Unfortunately on these sections, this has taken extensive investigation which has meant that locating the fault has been extremely time consuming.

"We have now located the sections where the fault originated and repair works are programmed for next week. We expect the planned installation and cable works will repair the fault, and that all lights will be back in working order by the end of that week.

"However, until excavation works have taken place, we cannot guarantee this will be the case. We will continue to work on site until the matter is resolved."
