School hopes for compromise that would 'improve the dangerous situation'

A school at the centre of controversial proposals to improve safety on Knutsford Road is hoping that a compromise can be found.

Earlier this year Cheshire East councillors met with the management team and PTA at Lindow Community Primary School, at their request, for them to highlight their concerns over the dangers of crossing this busy road.

As a result proposals were developed which include installing a new Puffin signal controlled crossing on Knutsford Road, making Church Road a one-way system and relocating the bus stop lay-by from Knutsford Road to Gravel Lane.

Zoe Wilson, Headteacher at Lindow Community Primary School, said "The Head Teacher and Governors at Lindow Primary School have been very concerned about the safety of our children on the journey to and from school for many years. problem has only got worse as the roads have got busier and the number of pupils attending our school has increased.

"We and Cheshire East Council (CEC) have been discussing many possible solutions to reduce the danger for children on both Upcast Lane and Knutsford Road for a long time. The school had requested that the council look at the provision of a safer crossing option on Knutsford Road, as we all agreed it is not safe for children and their families to cross this very busy fast road on a daily basis. We are grateful for the support and time that CEC has invested in discussing these ongoing concerns with us."

However, the plans have been met with opposition from some local business owners, their customers and some residents. As a result a petition containing 493 signatures has been submitted to Cheshire East Council calling for them to abandon the proposals. Instead they are requesting that Cheshire East Council uses any allocated funding to introduce traffic calming measures and improve signage.

Wilmslow Town Council also objected to the proposals from Cheshire East Highways because they felt they were not acceptable in their current form and require further consultation.

Zoe Wilson added "We were delighted when Cheshire East councillors attended a recent Governors' meeting to tell us the engineers at the council had investigated the issues and were proposing a plan to fund a Puffin Crossing. However, we understand that, during the recent public consultation about the crossing and the changes that would be made to the local road system, there has been objections and issues raised from within the local community.

"As a school, our primary concern is for the safety of our pupils, but we also recognise and understand the objections that have been raised to the plan. We have been heartened by the many supportive comments from the local community on social media stating that children's safety is of paramount importance.

"We would welcome any further discussion about any crossing solutions that the Highways Team at the council might put forward as an alternative workable option. We sincerely hope that there may be a compromise that would improve the dangerous situation for Lindow pupils, but mitigate the issues and concerns raised by our neighbours and local businesses to the current plan."

I hope discussions will lead to a compromise to make sure the children are safe without causing problems for the wider community.

I am sure that everyone wants the children to be safe, but I have yet to see evidence of the "consultation" which Cheshire East originally said had been carried out. This article now makes it clear that Cheshire East Councillors met with the school and PTA earlier this year and infers that the current proposals from Cheshire East were the outcome of this meeting. Which Cheshire East Councillors participated in this decision? Why did they not consult with the Town Council? It seems to me that the current impasse could so easily have been avoided.

The safety of children walking down Upcast Lane is a greater concern as the level of traffic has increased as the school has grown. Children and adults have already been clipped by wing mirrors from passing cars . What solution has the council suggested for the safety of children walking to school down Upcast Lane?

I agree entirely with Tracy Astons comment above. The lack of a proper pavement, the careless parking of cars and the already narrow nature of Upcast lane present (IMHO) a much greater risk to safety than that at Knutsford Road.

The crossing at Knutsford Road would be so much safer given the addition of an inexpensive, low-tech piece of kit............a Lollypop Lady!

The school is in the wrong place. No business would have been given planning permission there. Little alternative while the money grubbers just want to bung up cheap (to build not to buy) "cookie cutter" houses.
When the penny drops with our council that, if you build houses people with kids may well buy them and require school places. Roll on the 3000 kid high school.

I think the issue here is that too many people are looking at part of the problem from their limited perspective. The solution of a puffin crossing is just a poorly considered tactical fix and just transfers the problem a bit. I am staggered that CEC's allegedly intelliegent road planning folk could not identify all the concerns (if they can't then just read the comments here spans on other posts), put them all on a flip chart and then analyse and develop a set of solutions that addresses them all - if they can't (which looks likely) then I think a few of the correspondents to recents post about this issue could get together and do it for them. I would volunteer to take part - a genuine and serious offer. I am staggered and appalled that the safety of children (on the crossing and on Upcast Lane, and the general public on Knutsford Rd continues to be compromised by limited and incompetent thinking. Anyone want to join me in taking part in a local action planning group?

Peter - sadly I am not staggered by Highways decisions. Anyone who lives near Adlington Road knows that the road has dangers but Cheshire East was prepared to ignore that. The result is that we have a 40 mph speed sign situated approximately 100 yards from a 30mph sign. Further down, before the bend, there is a sign indicating a left hand turn, but no indication of the right hand turn into Wilmslow Park which you cannot see round the bend and which is before the left hand turn and which if you are turning right you hope and pray that no - one comes fast round the bend and hits the back of you. Approaching from the Wilmslow end, there is a sign showing a restricted limit for heavy lorries. This is almost entirely obscured by trees and because it is placed so close to Varden Bridge heavy lorries could not turn around and go back anyway. All in all I am not confident that Highways has safety as their principle concern.
