Call for 30mph limit to be enforced

DSCN2066

A group of local residents are calling for the speed limit to be enforced on Manchester Road.

Neighbours have set up a petition requesting that Cheshire East Council implements the speed limit of 30 mph on the stretch of Manchester Road between Styal Road and Mill Street.

This hill into Wilmslow is preceded by a long stretch of road between Handforth and Styal Road where the speed limit is 40mph and local residents say that very few drivers observe the speed reduction.

Local resident Marina told wilmslow.co.uk "The situation on the stretch of Manchester Road in Wilmslow between Styal Road and Mill Street is getting ridiculous and dangerous, particularly at weekends where many high performance cars drive at high speeds up and down this stretch of road numerous times."

She added "Other neighbours with children attending local schools are concerned for their children's safety when walking up and down the road when going to school and feel unsafe at weekends when so many speeding cars are driving up and down this stretch of road."

I wrote to the local councillors and the LA to strongly suggest that the Manchester Rd 40mph zone gets reduced to 30mph. This was a year or so back. The reasons were, that the road has become busier, and hence more dangerous especially with the increasing number of parked cars it is difficult for residents , of which I am one, to get a sight line. Bicycles use the pavement. Some speeding cars exacerbate all of this. I also suggest a mini roundabout at the junction with Styal Rd. The current 40mph zone speed limit should be enforced also, of course.

I would support the reduction of speed on this road. It is particularly dangerous near Wilmslow Garden Centre. The completion of the A555 (Manchester Airport Link) between Handforth and the Airport and Handforth and the Rising Sun at Hazel Grove is likely to see additional traffic using this road and making its way through the centre of Handforth in order to avoid the heavily used A34 bypass which currently is very clogged at rush hour around the junction north of Handforth Dean.

Agree, increase signage and enforcement of 30 mph on the existing section, and consider mini roundabout for the Styal Road junction (good idea) - but please don't reduce the 40 mph Manchester Road zone. It is not necessary. It is a sensible limit for such a wide road with good visibility. If needs be, introduce a couple of pedestrian safety islands and limit the parking. The current difficulties are a direct result of the SEMMS road works on the by-pass and the various house building/expansions. They will pass. But be assured any unnecessary speed reduction will last for ever!

I support the request to limit the speed limit to thirty miles per hour on the stretch of manchester road that meets MillStreet. In addition we have previously requested that a lower speed limit be introduced on Mill Street as there have been a number of near misses. This has been due to cars travelling at unacceptably high speeds given the difficulty in crossing the road due to the fact that pedestrians are unsighted from cars joining from the roundabout adjoining manchester road. We would welcome support on the issue of the lowering of the speed limit or some other 'traffic calming' measure e.g. Speed bumps being introduced on Mill Street.

Thanks for all your comments. Complaining/making suggestions on here is all well and good but nothing will happen unless you sign the petition (number of signatures hasn't changed since Monday).

I am very keen to sign the petition but the link does not appear to be working for me. Is anyone else experiencing problems?
I completely agree that the 30mph limit needs to be highlighted / enforced in some way. The stretch of road in question narrows significantly after the Styal road junction and also has quite a bend. As a resident it is becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous to exit our driveway/ cross the road on foot, as cars travel at speeds well in excess of the 30mph.

The link to the petition should work but here it is in full in any case: http://moderngov.cheshireeast.gov.uk/ecMinutes/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=51

Fully support a 30 mph speed limit between Styal Road and Mill Street. Before the build of the bypass there regularly were accidents opposite the entrance to Hill Top Avenue. Manchester Road has been getting busier again, and speeding cars coming fast over the brow of the hill present a real danger. I know of some neighbours in The Meade who do not dare turn right for fear of being hit, but turn left and go around the roundabout in order to go up Manchester Road. As a mother of young kids I would certainly worry about my kids crossing the road to go to school or to the playground in the Park.
