School children and passers-by weave blooming marvellous work of art

Wilmslow In Bloom, working with local artist Lorna Fellas, have created a wonderful art installation at Banks Square, as part of this year's entry into the North West in Bloom competition.

On Friday, 17th June, selected primary school children took part in weaving and plaiting fabric and willow onto fencing to form a huge floral sculpture. Then Saturday local residents were invited down to Bank Square to help complete the artwork which represents this year's entry theme of Butterflies and Bees.

Ruth McNulty, Chair of Wilmslow In Bloom said "The creation of this large piece of street art by children and casual passers-by is a marvellous start for our In Bloom entry. Under Lorna's guidance a very striking piece has been made, which we hope, among other benefits, will draw curious visitors to view at first hand and perhaps help the footfall in this northern part of the town. Many thanks to everyone involved."

Denise Valente added "The fence weaving project is a great addition to all the other wonderful things taking place within the town centre over the coming weeks in anticipation of the RHS judges arriving on 29th July for Wilmslow In Bloom, showing how so many parts of the community can work together to create something really outstanding."

Lorna Fellas said "A big thank you to all the people who worked so hard in getting this project off the ground and to the schools, children and adults who participated in creating the fence weaving and made such a wonderful display for Wilmslow in Bloom."

Local businesses have already started their planting as part of the project with the top of Grove Street blooming thanks to the local school planters and artwork is also popping up in business window displays, as many schools have been creating their very own 'Butterflies and Bees' masterpieces to support the Wilmslow In Bloom theme.

Helen Yates of Incredible Edible said "It was fantastic to see how engaged the schools were on Friday and the number of passers by who helped out on the Saturday was great. We're really pleased with the result of this community effort. It's great to feel the Summer buzz building up now with this fabulous piece of art at Bank Square and many of our local schools artwork appearing in business premise windows. If any schools have artwork to add, there's plenty of time left. They can contact me or link directly to a business."
