Parish Council funds more free CPR training for Handforth residents

Following six highly successful training sessions held last year, three further CPR courses will take place in Handforth.

A local mum is continuing her quest to help train as many local people as possible in a first aid technique which could help save people's lives.

Jean Billsdon, who is married to Peter and has lived in Handforth for over 50 years, was inspired to organise CPR training courses after watching a TV programme about heart attacks. She was surprised to learn that someone in the UK has a heart attack every two minutes and that less than 1 in 10 people survive a heart attack at home because most people do not feel confident to administer CPR.

Jean said "A BHF commissioned survey, which quizzed 2,072 adults, found 46% of people would be deterred by the fear of causing more harm than good, 40% of people lack the knowledge and skills to act and 57% said they would look for someone else to take the lead if they were to witness a medical emergency. So this got me thinking."

Having organised six training sessions with St Johns Ambulance for different age groups, from teenagers to pensioners, last year Jean has now secured further funding from Handforth Parish Council to enable her to arrange three more sessions.

These will all be held at the community room, Wilmslow View, Henbury Road, Handforth and start at 11am on May 21st, June 25th and July 30th. The June course will focus on choking.

Jean added "They were well attended last year and I hope to gain interest for the next 3 sessions.

"They really are very informative and give people the confidence to be able to confidently perform these life saving skills, if ever in the unfortunate position for them to be called upon."

All sessions are open to any Handforth residents over the age of 12 and are free of charge. To register for a session, please email Janet Taylor.
