The Dogfather: Puppy love

IMG_3370

Most of the serious dog behaviour issues I deal with could have been easily avoided had the owner known where their dog was heading.

Almost all dog behaviour is learned and or reinforced in the home environment. In my training classes I make a point of covering all aspects of respect, manners and leadership as well as sit, stay, heel etc.

There's not much point teaching a puppy basic obedience if everything in its environment is a contradiction.

Mutual respect is essential for a good relationship and applies to both dog and owner. Like all successful relationships both parties must play their part. Teaching basic obedience is a relatively easy process that most owners manage with little problem. Restraining their urges to behave in a way that contradicts that process is an entirely different matter.

You and your dog are a team and YOU have the greater responsibility.

A puppy is a blank sheet on which to paint your picture. If you want a calm, relaxed obedient dog you must paint with care.

I spend equal time on this aspect of training in all my classes. Relationship is a huge factor in your dog's behaviour. He may know exactly what you want him to do bit whether he will do it or not will depend on the relationship.

It's absolutely imperative that he respects you but respect is a two-way street. You don't get it if you don't give it.

Having a great relationship is very rewarding but like all good relationships it's not easy and you can't do what you don't know.

My next Puppy Class starts March 24 and if you have a young dog or puppy you may want to join us in our journey to success. You can do so by visiting www.vicbarlow.com and scrolling down to Training Classes.
