Cheshire East Conservative Group selects new Leader

Cllr Rachel Bailey (1)

Cheshire East Conservative Group has announced that the new Group Leader will be Councillor Rachel Bailey, ward member for Audlem.

The decision was taken at the Group's meeting tonight (Thursday, 14th January).

Councillor Bailey beat the only other leadership candidate, Councillor Janet Clowes ward member for Wybunbury.

The new Group Leader has been a Cheshire East councillor since May 2008 and is currently Cabinet Member responsible for Children and Families.

Cheshire East Council must ratify the decision of the Conservative Group and this is expected to be done at Full Council on Thursday 25th February, as the Conservative Group have a majority of members on the council.

Rachel Bailey will then become the first female Leader of Cheshire East Council - replacing Councillor Michael Jones who announced his resignation on December 8th 2015.

I hope our new Leader will fully introduce herself to the electorate before too long - and describe her credentials for being given this position, together with an outline of her ambition targets for CEC.
