Plans to build 21 homes at abattoir site refused

The Northern Planning Committee have today (Wednesday 13th January) refused to grant permission for a residential development on green belt land off Moor Lane currently occupied by an abattoir and a house.

The controversial application from the Stewart Milne Group to build 21 dwellings at Yewtree Farm was rejected unanimously, without any member of the committee offering any support for it.

The planning application was refused on the grounds of inappropriate development in the green belt and having a detrimental impact on neighbouring properties.

Councillor Gary Barton, who spoke against the application at the planning committee meeting, commented "As I have said before, getting rid of the abattoir at Yewtree Farm would be a good thing, but not at any price.

"The committee rightly accepted that this application was inappropriate in the green belt and acknowledged the harmful impact it would have had on adjoining properties. This is likely not to be the end of the debate about this site. The applicant has the right of appeal and they are also entitled to submit future applications.

"There are also unresolved matters concerning legal usage of the site, which I hope will be decided in the coming weeks. I will keep residents informed as best I can with any future updates."

Apart from the dwelling house, the owners say the site has been used as an abattoir since 2001. Two separate planning applications for Lawful Development Certificates to formalise these uses were submitted in August 2014 (dwelling house 14/3785M) and October 2014 (abattoir 14/4954M). Application 14/3785M was approved in March 2015 but application 14/4954M remains undetermined.

Excellent news, and for the right reasons.

Congratulations Cllr Barton, this risible speculative application (just over your back fence) was clearly wrong. Your electorate look forward to a similar level of support, should the case arise.
I'm informed that Private Eye magazine are waiting for the imminent formal resignation of the CEC "Leader" with some anticipation... but they do have column-inch space for more CEC news.
