Hundreds sign petition for Chapel Lane improvements

Petitions In - Chapel Lane Businesses - 2015

Wilmslow Town Council has agreed to fund new signage for the shops and businesses on Chapel Lane having been presented with a petition containing nearly 600 signatures.

Shopkeepers and business owners have come together to collect 580 signatures from visitors and local residents during a one month campaign, calling on the Council to improve the pavements and install new signage.

Some work to improve the pavement has already been carried out and more will happen in November and next year. A section of highway on Chapel Lane has also been resurfaced and in the new year the Community and Order Committee of Wilmslow Town Council is going to look at having Christmas lights in other areas of the town next year and work with businesses to improve the new floral displays.

Councillor Gary Barton is also working with Cheshire East to improve safety and visibility at the zebra crossing at the junction of Chapel Lane and Bedells Lane.

Speaking about the petition Councillor Barton said "The number of signatures on the petition underline how popular the Chapel Lane shops and businesses are to local residents and how much they can offer to people from further afield. Wilmslow Town Council has done a lot to improve Wilmslow Town Centre, and whilst that work is not complete, it is right that WTC does more to support other parts of our town.

"The new flowers and recent resurfacing work show that WTC and Cheshire East are investing in Wilmslow and there will be more to come. It is great that the businesses on Chapel Lane are coming together as having a united front means they can achieve more and it makes it easier for me as a ward Councillor to justify the investment. Chapel Lane has a lot to offer and I encourage people to come and have a look."

Nice to have part of Chapel lane re-surfaced,But the grids/gulleys were not cleared.I did ask the contractors to ensure this was done,as the vehicle (street sweeper) was there. so now when it rains or snows, the water makes pools on the road,as it cannot drain away. This freezes and damages the tarmac again. It would have been a big bonus to extend yellow lines all along Chapel Lane,to prevent all day parking,by office/town workers. The 88 bus and many lorries struggle to get through, by inconsiderate double parking.

Whilst our thanks go to Gary Barton obviously, may we all remember that most ,if not all of the credit must go to the ever cheerful, tireless and hard working Julie Dawn Potts.
She took it upon herself to try to improve her local area, and has gone a long way to achieving it.I hope the work can be carried on with the help and co-operation of others.
A massive thank-you Julie.

Might I be the first to offer our collective thanks on behalf of all the shops on Chapel Lane to Julie Dawn Potts for her efforts in making this come to fruition.

I know that this is something that she has dedicated a lot of time and effort to, and has pulled all of the shops together in an effort to get our voices heard.

I would also like to thank Gary for his work, and I'm sure we all hope that the momentum can be kept up to complete all the works next year.

I want to echo the comments of others in adding that if it wasn't for Julie Dawn Potts then none of this would have happened. As a newcomer to Chapel Lane I was initially suprised by the lack of community amongst the business owners... and some negative comments about not joining in local events throughout wilmslow to heighten the awareness along the lane.

Since Julie has been involved a Chapel Lane business group facebook page has been set up, weve asked for better signage, and planters, we've now got street poppies for remembrance day, we're organising street events and Xmas lights not to mention a much better community spirit. Next year i hope all businesses will be more involved in all Wilmslows community and charity raising events.

Thankyou very much Julie and I do hope U continue to volunteer your services for all our benefits.
