Wilmslow Town Council has organised a new free summer event for the residents of Wilmslow.
Wilmslow's first ever 'Cinema on the Carrs' will take place on the evening of Saturday 20th June as a prelude to the now established 'Party on the Carrs' the following day.
The open air cinema evening will be funded by Wilmslow Town Council, creating an exciting midsummer weekend event.
Twenty years after the Rex Cinema closed its doors for the final time this free to attend event will give the residents of Wilmslow the opportunity to get together in The Carrs and enjoy a movie.
The chosen film for this inaugural 'Cinema on the Carrs' evening is Mama Mia, enabling Wilmslow residents of different age groups to enjoy a summer evening of fun and entertainment whilst joining in with the songs.
The cinema arena will open at 6pm. A performance from the 'Magic Voices' Choir of their recent highly rated 'Music from the Musicals' programme, as performed at the Royal Northern College of Music, will precede the film from around 6.45pm. Following the Magic Voices performance the film will be shown on a large digital screen, with the evening expected to end at approximately 9.45pm.
People are encouraged to bring their deck chairs, travel rugs and picnic hampers, but no gazebos please. A Movie Food Court will be available from approximately 6pm, offering hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, ice cream, donuts and a full bar service to help provide the full cinema experience.
Wilmslow Town Clerk Matthew Jackson stated that it was the Town Council's wish "to continue and improve what has become a very well attended annual event on the Carrs Park. This year by adding the 'Cinema on the Carrs' concept to the event it is hoped that developing a 'Weekend on the Carrs' will appeal to an even wider audience and get better value for the fixed infrastructure costs.
"We really hope that people will enter into the spirit of the 'Mamma Mia' movie evening, it would be great to see people singing and dancing and having a great time. The Carrs is a fabulous venue and the 'On the Carrs' concept could be rolled out creatively in future years if the public embrace the cinema idea this year, indeed what would be great is if a ' Weekend on the Carrs' event could spawn a town-wide coordinated events in future years to benefit the business community."
Residents are encouraged to come early to get a good position to enjoy what should be a fun filled evening.

Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below.
No doubt someone, who will still be in office in June, has applied for the relevant Film Licences and arranged for the Regulatory Risk Assessments and Method Statements to be agreed and signed off. Emergency Services notifications; evacuation plans... etc.
Seriously; professional politicians have made events like this, organised by amateur politicians, a legal nightmare.
It's no wonder I took early retirement.
I live in Alderley Edge and I am jealous!!
I hope everyone has a wonderful time; great fun!
I will listen carefully for the singing...
When the boys at Christ College Brecon suggested a Jazz event there who would have thought that Brecon in Wales would become one of THE centres of world jazz within 20 years of their decision!?
I would love to see Alderley Music Week - Folk in the Park, Classical in the Park, Big Band in the Park, Jazz in the Park and Rock in the Park all on consecutive nights
No - I am applauding Wilmslow Town Council on their decision to enhance their special Carrs Park Day with this event, knowing that something like this could never happen with the existing PC in Alderley. It is a struggle for them to even support the May Fair.
You will know from what I have posted on ae.com that I would love to see a small luxury cinema in the Festival Hall but until we are elected it is impossible to gauge how possible that might be.
I have made enquiries and hope that an Independent Group who specialise in this field will present the costings and possibilities to us in due course. We can then present our thinking to our Village and ask the residents what they would like us to do.
Have a look at Kino Digital in Rye to see what is possible, if this interests you too.
I think we are some distance away from this in Alderley though. We have a new Medical Centre to complete and an old Festival Hall that needs very careful planning. There is much work to be done to examine all the plans, tenders, contracts and costings before we do anything else - if we are elected.
One day, one day..........
As for a small luxury cinema in the Festival Hall, the Parish Council should NEVER give permission or even think about this as it would be totally unfair on the local people who are not able to pay "luxury" prices.
That's fine.
If we decide to put this proposal forward to the Villagers in Alderley Edge as an effective means of funding what I suspect will be vast maintenance costs of the Festival Hall, any sensible marketing plan by a business like Kino Digital would be to price their tickets at about the same level as the cinema in Didsbury.
If people think that that is too expensive then market forces normally dictate
that they will not use the facility. But others will and the contributions will help to make other facilities within the complex sustainable.
I don't think we could or should say " we have looked at the prices that they might charge and have decided that you cannot have this cinema because you won't be able to afford it".
Jon, I won't post on here again because our discussion is not really something the good folk of Wilmslow want to hear.
But I am still humming 'Saturday Night at the Movies'...............
I note the budget allocation for this year's Party is £10K, same as last year's less ambitious event.
