Grant for Young People to create Tatton Show garden

Wilmslow Town Council has approved a grant application from the SK9 Young People's Fund to enable them to create a garden for the RHS Tatton Flower Show.

The group which is made up of 24 young people, at least 12 of whom are residents of Wilmslow, have been given £1684 so they can put together a school garden in partnership with Wilmslow High School.

The funding is to enable the group to purchase all the necessary plants, soil, equipment and promotional materials.

The theme for the school gardens at this year's Tatton Flower Show is 'Industrial Heritage' and the group have decided to include an element of railway heritage as well as the button industry, the prisoner of war camp at Handforth, the copper mines in Alderley Edge and the heritage at Quarry Bank Mill.

Speaking at the Wilmslow Town Council meeting on Monday, 20th April, Cllr Ruth McNulty said "I think on the basis that this is going to be managed at Wilmslow High School, we as Wilmslow Town Council should fund the entire amount of the grant."

She added "I hope these young people understand what sort of work is involved in putting on a show at Tatton because you will be on your knees literally and figuratively at the end of it. Good luck to you all."

The SK9 Young People's Fund was set up in 2013 to review grant applications from youth groups and direct funding to youth projects. It is is funded by Wilmslow Town Council, who ringed fenced £25,000 of their 2013/14 precept budget, and Handforth Parish Council who allocated £10,000.

I was very impressed by Joe McBride's presentation at the town council meeting on Monday. Without sounding patronising, it was good to see someone of his age with such good presentation skills and confidence.

Good luck to all involved in the project.

These are clearly young people with ideas that need nurturing.
