Blooming marvellous: Wilmslow wins gold

Wilmslow has picked up an incredible three awards at the RHS North West in Bloom 2014 awards presentation held in Southport today (Friday 24th October).

In their third year of entry Wilmslow has received the Biodiversity Award for Lindow Common, the Most Improved Entry in the North West In Bloom competition and a GOLD Award for Best Large Town Entry.

Volunteers from Incredible Edible were supported by over 70 businesses, nine schools, various organisations and local residents who all came together to ensure Wilmslow had a golden glow for this year's competition, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the In Bloom competition with a 'Growing for Gold' theme.

Helen Yates, who launched Incredible Edible Wilmslow, told wilmslow.co.uk "I am so thrilled at today's results. It has been a wonderful day and a real tribute to all the hard work from the Wilmslow Business Group, Council and the many voluntary groups in Wilmslow who have supported the In Bloom entry throughout the year. We can't wait to find out the theme for next year now, so that we can start planning again!"

Cllr Ellie Brooks, of Wilmslow Town Council, said "I am very proud to have chaired this year's Incredible Edible Wilmslow in Bloom entry to the RHS North West In Bloom competition. An amazing number of businesses, local community groups and Town Councillors joined our committee and pulled out all stops to Grow for Gold and we came away with 3 very strong awards!"

Ellie added "Funding from the Town council was crucial and I'm sure most residents will have been impressed and will feel the modest amount was money well spent to have our beautiful town recognised in the wider world."

"Wilmslow is officially GOLD! Let's keep it that way!"

The North West in Bloom competition aims to encourage local communities to improve and care for their environment through imaginative planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping, conservation and recycling projects, and to sweep away eyesores that blight our streets such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.
